How Long do Bathroom Renovations Take

There are many steps involved in a bathroom renovation. You have to take them into consideration before you proceed. Knowing the renovation period allows you to prepare by transferring your things to a temporary bathroom. How long do bathroom renovations take? For a normal size bathroom, it could take around 3 to 7 weeks. Below are the usual work done during a renovation and their corresponding duration.

Table of Contents

DEMOLITION

This is where the contractor tears down walls and other finishes to prepare for new ones. Timber and dry walls are easier to demolish than concrete walls. Here, the installation of new structural supports will also be done. The duration for demolition is around 2 to 5 days.

PLUMBING & ELECTRICAL ROUGHING IN

The plumber and the electrician will start running pipes at the walls and the floor. This is so the pipes are hidden underneath the finished walls and not jutting out. The duration for this is around 1 to 4 days.

PREPARATION FOR TILING

The walls need to be straight and plumb before the tiles are installed. If there are new windows and doors, the opening should at least already be in place. The floor slab should also be dry in preparation for waterproofing application. This stage usually takes 1 to 3 days to do.

SHEETING

Sheeting of the walls and ceiling usually take 1 to 2 days.

WATERPROOFING

The bathroom is then waterproofed as required. This will prevent leaks from the bathroom and it will not affect the adjacent rooms. The waterproofing mixture takes one day to dry. The entire process can take 2 to 4 days because there should be 2 to 3 coats of waterproofing.

TILING

Make sure you give instructions on how to set the tiles so that there are no narrow cuts at the corners. Once the tiles are placed, they will have to be grouted and sealed. If you tile the walls from floor to ceiling, this step would take around 6 to 10 days to complete.

TRIMS & PAINTING

If you have new doors or windows installed, the door jambs and window frames can be installed next. After which they can be painted together with the door and ceiling. This process takes only 1 to 2 days.

PLUMBING FIXTURES

Now the area is ready to receive the plumbing fixtures. Installation of sinks, toilet, shower heads, faucets and floor drains usually takes 1 to 2 days.

LIGHTS AND SWITCHES

Since the electrical pipes and wiring have already been roughed in, the electrician can now install the lighting fixtures, switches, exhaust fan and outlets. This typically takes another 1 to 2 days to do.

ACCESSORIES

Last but not the least, the toilet accessories can already be installed. This includes the towel rod, soap holder, glass shelves and toilet paper holder. Shower enclosures and mirrors are also part of this stage. This can be done in a day or two. After this, have a general cleanup of the bathroom and it will be ready to use.
